NEUROSCIENCE

The Foundation is a center for the study of the oncological and Nervous System diseases with a strong clinical sign. The unique in Italy high-field MR and Linear particle accelerator with micro multilamellar collimator in clinical veterinary, the Foundation provides its service referring both to the Vet exam (first level test) structures with low-field MRI equipment exam (consulting).

Neuroscience include all the disciplines with the study of the nervous system such as neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurobiology, neuropharmacology, clinical neurology, neurosurgery, neuroadiology etc. The Foundation is particularly active in clinical neurology, neuroradiology and spinal neurosurgery.

NEUROSURGERY

The neurosurgery is a discipline relating to neuroscience that is dedicated to the treatment of the Nervous System diseases. The areas of responsibility are made by the cranial and spinal pathology and peripheral nervous system. With regard to the cranial pathology, in Veterinary Medicine the most interesting neurosurgical pathologies are formed by the meningeal tumors in dogs and cats as well as the pathology of nasal and auricular border, whether it is benign or malignant. With regard to spinal pathology, a large part is devoted to the disco-vertebral pathology with particular enphasis for the decompression surgery of acute and chronic intervertebral disk diseases as well as vertebral stabilizer. Among the devices that make it easier for neurosurgical intervention first of all the operating microscope should be mentioned. The magnification of the image associated with the dual-axial and non-coaxial illumination allows the impossible to the naked eye precision but not even with magnifying glasses system. Great importance is given to the anesthesia equipment, particularly with regard to the turbine ventilator and monitoring the vital signs.

NEUROLOGY

The neurology is a branch of neuroscience that is applied to the study of diseases of the nervous system. The main point of action of neurologist is neurological examination. From the moment when the nervous system is not visible from the outside of the patient and therefore is impossible to examination of such inspection or palpation, neurological examination is primarily an investigation of functional type where both motor and sensory  functionality is explored as well as of the higher centers of integration. On the basis of medical, anamnestic and epidemiological history, a doctor draws up, once the location of the lesion is established, the list of differential diagnoses most likely etiological and sets the process of deepening necessary to determine which is the ongoing disease.

A key point of instrumental neurologic diagnostics is the examination of Magnetic Resonance, election survey that allows you to explore from the morphological point of view the Nervous System. Other tests that may be needed to establish a diagnosis are the electrodiagnostic investigation, that allows explore the neuromuscular function, examination of the cerebrospinal fluid and the profile of infectivity. Once the diagnosis has been placed neuroanatomical and instrumental examinations have been conducted, Neurologist establishes the clinical diagnosis and then sets the most appropriate treatment protocol. A task of neurologist is to evaluate the clinical course of the ongoing disease by planning the most appropriate screening tests.

EXTRA MOENIA NEUROLOGY SERVICE

The Foundation, following the advice of many referent veterinarians, has launched a consulting extra moenia neurology service at clinics and hospitals of Lombardia region which request the service. The service is carried out by two researchers at the Foundation Dr. Massimo Sala and Dr. Giovanni Mazza, both specialists in neurological pathology in pets. This new service has an aim to provide the first neurological framework as well as the execution of control visits in place to those who for various reasons cannot go to the Foundation for the consult. The doctors who are interested can get more information by contacting the specialists at the Foundation.

MEDICAL CENTER FOR EPILEPSY

At La Cittadina Fondazione Studi e Ricerche Veterinarie was established a working group dedicated to epilepsy in dogs and cats. Epilepsy identifies various causes. It may be idiopathic (of congenital), symptomatic (caused by an underlying brain pathology) or reactive (determined by systemic alteration). Given the diagnostic and especially therapeutic complexity of various forms of epilepsy, the working group proposes a three-fold purpose, both research and diagnostic and therapeutic guaranteeing a support for family veterinarians and  owners relating to the management of the epileptic patient through the setting and monitoring of anticonvulsant therapy with particular regard to the modulation of therapy and the choice of the most appropriate drug protocols for the control of seizures in each individual patient.
